On Simplicity

People treat simplicity as if it meant less complexity. I think of it differently: simplicity is what you get once you understand a problem well enough to know what matters, and throw away the rest.

You can tell a simple system by asking of each part why it is there. In a simple system there is always an answer. Nothing sits there out of habit or convention, and removing any one piece would make the whole thing worse.

Removing things is the easy half. Knowing what to keep is the work.
